We are required to enforce new federal, state, and local regulations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, and want to familiarize you with these safety standards before you return to dance. Our Great South Bay Dance COVID-19 Safety Plan is based on:

Arrival – Only registered dancers will be permitted to enter the building or outdoor dance space, and staff members will be stationed at our entrance to receive all dancers. Classes for younger children will be scheduled 15 minutes apart to allow one class to be fully dismissed before the next class arrives. Parents waiting to drop-off their children must stand 6-feet apart by using the space markers provided.

Health Screenings – At the studio entrance or outdoor check-in station, dancers must be accompanied by a parent as a staff member performs a brief health screening that includes:

  1. Taking their temperature using a contactless thermometer
  2. Asking if they have experienced any symptoms of COVID-19 in the past 14 days
  3. Asking if they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days
  4. Asking if they have been exposed to another person who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days
  5. Dancers who pass the health screening can remove their facemask as they proceed into the building.
  6. Dancers who do not pass the health screening will need to sit that day’s dance class out and be monitored before they are permitted to return to dance class. They will also have the option of either attending their class virtually from home, or can schedule a make-up. If necessary, Great South Bay Dance staff will enact the Protocol for a Confirmed Case of COVID-19 (see page 2).

Face Masks for Staff – Face masks must be worn by Great South Bay Dance staff both indoors and outdoors. Staff members are permitted to temporarily remove their face masks while spending limited portions of time more than 6-feet apart from dancers or other staff members.

Face Masks for Dancers – Face masks must be worn by dancers until they pass the daily Health Screening administered by Great South Bay Dance staff upon arrival at dance programs. However, since dance is an inherently aerobic form of exercise that often raises the heart rate, face masks are optional for dancers during dance class. According to New York State Department of Health’s “Reopening New York, Sports and Recreation Guide,” Great South Bay Dance must “ensure 6 ft. distance between individuals at all times, whether indoors or outdoors, unless safety or core activity (e.g. practicing, playing) requires a shorter distance. If a shorter distance is required, individuals must wear face coverings, unless players are unable to tolerate such a covering for the physical activity (practicing, playing).” Regardless, face masks are encouraged to be worn by dancers at the outdoor check-in station, and inside the dance building while in the lobby, dressing room, and bathroom.

Waiting Room – The waiting room is temporarily closed, and only registered dancers will be permitted to enter the building. Once fall registration has ended, a schedule will be created to allow two different parents to sit in the waiting room during class each week to take turns viewing class while it is in session. At our outdoor dance programs, families may watch dance class from a 100-foot distance from the dance space, and may not congregate in groups while watching.

Desk Appointments – Many transactions including registration, payments, and questions can be performed by phone or online. However, in the event that you would like to enter the building to speak to one of our staff members in person, please call and make an appointment. We will schedule a time during which you may enter the studio while dancers are in class and the lobby is empty. At our outdoor dance programs, a staff member will be at the check-in station for the first three weeks of the program to assist with any questions or transactions. After three weeks, you may contact the front desk by phone or email for assistance.

Dance Studio / Outdoor Dance Space – We are strictly reducing our class capacity to 10 dancers per indoor class and 15 dancers per outdoor class. By limiting class size, we are able to spread our dancers more than 6 feet apart at the dance barres and “center floor” throughout the dance studio. We have used tape to mark where dancers will stand at the dance barres and center floor to maintain a distance of 6 feet apart. The portion of class known as “going across the floor” will be performed two dancers at a time with the rest of the class waiting spaced throughout the room. At our outdoor dance programs, chalk will be used on the floor to indicate 6-foot spacing between dancers. Dance exercises and activities that cause dancers to move within close proximity of each other will be temporarily suspended. Props that have been used during class by individual dancers will be immediately removed from circulation after use to be cleaned.

Dismissal – Dancers will be dismissed by a staff member from the building entrance or outdoor check-in station promptly within five minutes of class ending. Parents waiting to pick-up their children must stand 6-feet apart from each other by using the space markers in the parking lot. Please be on time to pick up your children; we will not allow dancers in the next class to enter the building until all dancers from the previous class have been dismissed.

Cleaning & Sanitizing – Staff members will clean the following between each class:

  1. Dance Studio: dance barres, door handles, props used by individual dancers
  2. Dressing Room: cubby, wall hooks, benches
  3. Lobby: desk, door handles, entrance door
  4. Bathroom: sink, toilet, door handles
  5. Outdoor Dance Space: check-in station, props used by individual dancers
  6. Floors, mirrors, and other items will be sanitized daily

Staff Requirements – Staff will undergo the same health screenings as dancers to ensure that they are fit to work. Any staff member who does not pass the health screening will be sent home for the day and monitored before returning to the studio. If necessary, Great South Bay Dance staff will enact the Protocol for a Confirmed Case of COVID-19.

Protocol for a Confirmed Case of COVID-19 – When a staff member or student is found to have COVID-19, Great South Bay Dance will immediately contact Suffolk County Health Department to screen and assess with whom the individual has been in contact. With this information, Great South Bay Dance will alert those who have been in regular contact or “close contact” as defined by the CDC, and will advise those individuals to quarantine themselves for 14 days. Additionally, Aqueous Solutions, a professional disinfecting company, will be contracted to do a deep cleaning of the entire studio.

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly changes day to day, and we will continually update our Safety Plan to ensure that we are in compliance with current safety standards. The most recent date that the Safety Plan has been updated will always be posted next to the header at the top of this page.
